...if you're so inclined and haven't already done so in another thread. I thinks it's fun to know what everyone's growing!
My list is longer than I had hoped but it's shorter than last year by quite a bit so I'm content that I'm making progress in the right direction for me. Thanks to all those who have shared seeds with me- I will likely take pics and post about how they do and also will attempt to bag, save and share seeds of those varieties not available for purchase. Feel free to let me know if I've posted errors in spelling or variety names. You folks make me feel better. I haven't finalized my grow out list yet. The problem is that I have access to a fair amount of ground and could borrow more. The real limitation is how much garden I can keep weeded. I let them sprawl last year which worked sort of all right, but the weeds won.:(
I had planned on using a Mantis as a weeder. It worked to an extent, but has two problems for me. I have short arms and a long body. That means it's too low and hurts my back. The other problem is that if there are any rocks or roots in the soil it turns into a hard to control pogo stick. I've obliterated more than one plant with it. My plans this year are to stake the tomatoes and use a 5 hp tiller that's mounted behind a garden tractor to do the early weeding. I may also put down plastic or something similar as a weed barrier on some and irrigate under it. Last year I depended on a map to know which tomato was which. That didn't work so well. After the tomatoes and weeds grew it was very tedious to figure out which plant was which. :?!?:Last year was also a horrible to evaluate anything because of the drought. I want to evaluate many of them again. This is what I have seed for and right now I intend to grow: Amana Orange Amish Paste Arkanas Traveler Aunt Ruby's German Green Balconi Red Balconi Yellow Belmonte Beefsteak Berkley Tie-Dye Big Beef Big Raspberry Black Cherry Black Moor Black from Tula Brandywine Pink Brandywine Red Brandywine Yellow Calypso Caspian Pink Cherokee Purple Costoluto Genovese Coyote Cherry Roma Cream Sausage Dr Wyche's Yellow Dwarf Inproved Champion Dwarf Mr Snow Earl of Edgecomb Elbe Franchi Giant Pear Franchi Red Cherry Glacier Grappoli d'Inverno Great White Green Zebra Gold Nugget Golden Jubilee Golden Sunrise Gulliver Homestead Iditarod Red Indigo Rose Jaune Flammee Japanese Black Trifele Jasenicki Jabucar Jubilee (Burpee's) Kimberly Market Wonder Mexico Midget Michael Pollan Micro Tom Missouri Pink Love Apple Mr Stripey Mrs Maxwell's Big Itailian Mortgage Lifter New Big Dwarf New Yorker Novosadsici Jabucar Opalka Orange Banana Oregon Spring Paul Robeson. Black Plum Lilian's Yellow Heirloom Isis Candy OSU Blue/P20 I'm also spending a lot of time at Tatianna's site which just makes the "That sounds neat wish list." grow longer. :o I'm a sucker for different and cool looking tomatoes and plants. I also liked the hearts I grew last year so much that I want to try more and different ones this year. I put 183 plants out last year and had space. I'm thinking somewhere around 225 this year. In reality it's apt to creep to more. |

Kath,
I see your still planting a great deal of varieties and I wish you the best. I've gone the other direction, from growing hundreds of varieties to just my best of the favorites from over the years. Last year I got down to 23 tomato plants. This year I hope to reduce that number to about 10-12 at the most. All are slicers, mostly pinks, but an occasional black still in the mix. They are: German Johnson-Benton Strain: grafted to maxifort rootstock (seed from last years plants, which were the best tasting and most impressive tomato I ever grew). German Johnson-Benton Strain: From original seed from Dana. Purple Dog Creek: Last years second best, Number one the year before. (2011) Liz Birt: A tasty pink cross between Brandywine and Cherokee Purple that has been the first to ripen last year and previous years. Brandywine-Glicks: large pink Brandywine that surpasses most other Brandywines including Sudduth's most years. Brandywine-Sudduth's: Another large tasty pink Brandywine that usually is a little less productive than Glick's or Cowlick's. Cowlick's: A large pink Brandywine that has been exceptional over the years, out- producing both BW-Glick's and BW-Sudduth's most years. Original P.L. but also a R.L. variety discovered by Jon in Ala. Barlow Jap: A large pink tomato that resembles the better pink brandywines but usually ripens earlier. BW-CXDDR: A large pink Cowlick Brandywine-Dana's Dusky Rose cross that's been a favorite for the last five years now. The best of both, with the larger size of the BW. Dana's Dusky Rose: The best tasting of the black tomatoes. More medium-sized than other dark favorites, but oh, so good. Bear Creek: Another cross between Pink Brandywine and Cherokee Purple but this one is on the dark side of Cherokee Purple. Great taste but not as large as the other BW-CP crosses.
Has anyone grown Momotaro OP before? I'm wondering how similar is this to the Momotaro F1. I can't seem to find much information about it.
I'm also growing it for the first time and wasn't able to find a review either. Btw, I'm probably not the only one wondering why Caspian Pink is missing from your list.:cute: kath |
Kath,
I see your still planting a great deal of varieties and I wish you the best. Camo
Thanks, Mike- wishing you the same. Please be patient with me and remember how many years of growouts it to get your list so small.;) kath |

Kath,
Caspian Pink was the first tomato I grew. After growing many more varieties, there are others that I like more and there are also more new ones than I have space for. So, it didn't have a chance to get onto my grow list. |

My husband hasn't seen the list yet. It's best not to mention it until it's too late and they are ready to go in the ground?!?
It's a list that's still in flux as I am still acquiring a few more. Oh, my it's an agonizing process, isn't it?! I've got to keep it under 90... last year it was 87 and I WAS going to cut down the list. NOTE: I got Momotaro OP from Wintersown in 2012. I sent some of my own saved seed to the large swap run by Heather in Canada this year. I have never grown the F1, so I can't tell you how close they are to each other. The fruit were pink, medium sized, slightly oval and really sweet. In the photo of my son in my avatar, he is holding a Momotaro OP. The plant wasn't particularly large in 2012, but it was an unusual season. I've already started my seed. I started one batch 12/19/12 and one a few days after. From memory (which is pretty bad at times), this is my list:
Brandy Boy (OP seed sent by a friend) 1884 Yellow Pinkheart Brown Sioux (seed sent by a friend) Yellow Sweet 100 (OP seed sent by a friend) Rose Quartz Multiflora Casino Chips Big Cheef F6 Indian Stripe Brown and Black Boar Gary'O Sena JD's Special C-Tex Early Black Azoychka Spudakee Bloody Butcher Lemon Boy (DH loves this one) Sibirskiy Velikan Rozovyi Russian Queen Dino Eggs Tomesol Blush Purple Russian Daniels Hege German Pink Purple Dog Creek Aunt Ginny's Purple Stump of the World NOT Stump of the World (one seed is RL. I'm growing that little plant out!!) Ethel Watkin's Best Paul Robeson Haley's Purple Comet "The Dwarfs" Most of the released varieties from the Dwarf Project. New Big Dwarf Extreme Bush Dwarf Golden Champion I have a few runts. If they decide to grow, I'll also have: Dice's Mystery Black Not Black Cherry Andrew Rahart's Jumbo Grape I'm also going to try my hand at grafting. I picked up a pack of Celebrity starts at Lowes. I haven't decided which heirlooms I'm going to graft. I planted WAY too many seeds, though. I think I'm sitting on 250 to 300 plants right now. I have a few extra to experiment with. I'll be using aquarium airline tubing to hold the grafts together. Christy PS- To those Tomatovillians who were so very generous and sent me some of the seed for the tomatoes you see listed above, I send a hearty thanks. My garden and dinner table will be all the richer for your generosity. My taste buds salute you!! |
Thanks to everyone who's posted a list so far- love to see the results of everyone's careful planning.
Joe- it's good to know that I'm not the only one who has fun looking at all these amazing lists- small or huge, it's interesting to see what everyone chooses; though I admit I'm always relieved to see that mine list is still shorter than many others but I'm encouraged by those who show more restraint. I wish you luck paring down your 2012 list and holding to your goal of 80 for next year. Robin, thanks for your input about Momotaro op- I grew the hybrid twice and don't remember any elongation but the size was the same as in your photo. Looks like many will be growing it this year so we'll see what we get. So happy to see that there's someone that will be growing even more cherry tomato varieties than I have! I'll be trying to keep mine pruned early in the season until I taste some fruits to see which ones I like the best. Checkerkitty, I think you've got a great list AND a great memory! Long or short- please post it! Thanks- kath |
