Cucumbers, What are you growing

this spring? I have Diva and Boothby's Blonde in the ground and Poona Kheera and Lemon in containers.

shelleybean March 8, 2007 06:24 PM

I'm growing National Pickling because they did so well for me last year. I plan to use these for pickles but I like them for salads, as well. I, too, am growing Boothby's Blonde (recommended by Spudleaf Willie) and I am trying Muncher as a third variety.

Worth1 March 8, 2007 06:31 PM

I’m growing, Straight Eight, Market More 76, Lemon, and Sumter.
I’ve never grown Lemon and Sumter before, what are they like?

I'm growing Beth Alpha, Lugissima, and Lemon this year.

Another two months to go but National Pickling, Market More 76, Poona Kheera and Diva will be going into the ground here.

duajones March 8, 2007 10:01 PM

First time for me on the Lemon as well Worth, cant tell you what its like but wanted to see for myself, thats why I am growing it.

mresseguie March 9, 2007 02:19 AM

Oh, boy. I know it'll be June before I can plant them, but my mouth is already drooling.

I'm planning to plant one of the Market More varieties. I'll plant a cuke that is popular in Taiwan. I'll hazard a translation as 'big cuke'. Also, I will plant a Japanese variety. It is long and thin. I do not know if it is the same cuke that is often sold as "Oriental Cucumber". The package is written entirely in Japanese except for one key word-CUCUMBER. Hmmm. I don't have to guess that part.

I also intend to grow a pickling variety for the first time, but I don't know which yet. I'll happily take suggestions.

Going to try County Fair this year as bacterial wilt...via that darn cucumber beetle...killed most of my plants last year. County Fair is reportedly resistent to BW. Also trying Sweet Success, Eureaka and Lemon for first time. Returning from last year will be Poona Kheera and Marketmore 76.

And I told myself that I will be more consistent in the use of Daconil...the soggy weather last year also caused havoc with diseases.

MawkHawk March 9, 2007 08:19 AM

Market More 76 and some "burpless" variety, only because seeds were 1/2 off at the local nursery....

cdntomato March 9, 2007 08:47 AM

So far: Uzbekski, Poona Kheera, Lemon, Crystal Apple, Delcrow (an ancient award-winning Canuck liberated from a dark 'n dusty genebank), Early Morden (a Canuck pickler), Early Russian, Ukrainian and Parisian picklers. Probably an Armenian cuc/melon and a long English cuc type as well.

Jennifer, contemplating trellis options right now

feldon30 March 9, 2007 09:42 AM

County Fair does not produce the compound that cucumber beetles are attracted to.

A solution that was bandied about on GW was to take a plastic cup, squeeze the juice out of a regular cucumber (especially the rind), and then mix in some Sevin dust. The idea is that it should attract cucumber beetles and kill them.

montanamato March 10, 2007 09:03 AM

Growing NC Heirloom pickling for the 4th year...New ones this year are Armstrong Early Cluster and Delikatesse...
Picked up a pack of Eureka from a greenhouse last summer and they were really nice...If I ever was inclined to plant a hybrid again, I would get Eureka...Luckily nothing here bothers cucumbers or squash and they are always insect and wilt free...

Early Russian, Lemon and something yardlong that's 'in the mail' . I'll probably have to trellis it up the outside of the dog kennel for the chipmunks to snack on. :(

johno March 10, 2007 05:50 PM

I'm trying Parisian Pickling this year. My father loves to make pickles every year, and his favorite is National.

duajones March 12, 2007 10:28 AM

Lemon and Boothby's Blonde germinated yesterday, couple of weeks behind the Diva and PK. Wont be long till Im eating cukes now!

spyfferoni March 14, 2007 11:16 AM

Has anyone seen seeds for Diva in any of the stores? I should've ordered it, but I thought I would be able to buy it locally. I wasn't planning on ordering any more seeds.

Thanks,
Tyffanie

Adenn1 March 14, 2007 11:26 AM

Never have seen Diva at any of the stores around here in Philly...only the usual stuff...Straight Eight, Burpee Hybrid,Tasty Green, etc.

feldon30 March 14, 2007 11:38 AM

I've been looking for Diva on seed racks but no joy. I have seen Lemon and Marketmore '76, but no Diva.

Worth1 March 14, 2007 12:15 PM

Feldon,
Market More and Straight Eight are good choices for down there.
Market More did very well in Angleton and thats where I discovered it.
Both have a great cucumber taste.

Adenn,

Be sure to let us know how County Fair fairs... 8)

I ordered it from somewhere???? but evidently they were out and substituted some other hybrid. I also have terrible problems with wilt carried by cuke beetles... I plant cukes every three weeks through the season just to get a good harvest.

I always plant Lemon... I really like it. In addtion, I'll be planting Bush Pickle, White Wonder and Straight Eight... same as last year.

I'm growing Rocky from Territorial for the first time this year. Just planted them last Sunday- perhaps today I'll see some sprouts...

bluelacedredhead March 16, 2007 09:00 PM

Mudcat, Tell me more about White Wonder Pleez.......I had someone send me some WW in a Christmas Gift exchange. Googling only brought up a seed catalogue info from Britain, as I recall.
S. Indiana isn't much different from my area as far as growing. How did it perform for you last year??

And then there's CdnTomato's list. It just hit me now.. Delcrow?? Hmmm, based on my knowledge of how cultivars were named in Canada, could that be a cucumber developed in Delhi, ONT and grown at the Simcoe Experimental Stn?? Morden's an easy one ;)

feldon30 March 17, 2007 02:45 PM

I posted in this thread:
Anyone grow 2 cucumber plants in a 5 gallon grow bag?

but I have started Poona Kheera and Lemon Cucumber in a 15 gallon pot. I am building a 6' x 4' trellis for them to climb. I hope that's enough for 3 plants.

barefootgardener March 18, 2007 11:20 AM

I am planting Lemon and Boston Pickling Cucumber. I've grown these before, love their flavor and very productive plant's. I grew my lemon cukes on a trellis last year and they did great.

Earl March 19, 2007 09:08 PM

I love cukes and making pickles but the cuke beetles love them more than I do! They wipe me out every year, but I keep buying them cuke seeds. Must have a dozen types to try. :-) I may try to cover vines with remay cloth. Also going to try some in the greenhouse.

feldon30 March 19, 2007 10:14 PM

Have you tried buying some yellow plastic cups and mashing up some cucumber peels (especially at the blossom end) with some Sevin dust?

That was a remedy that was posited over at GW. I don't know what results there were.

And of course there are varieties like County Fair which are supposed to not give off the aroma that the beetles are attracted to.

duajones March 19, 2007 11:12 PM

I dont know that I have even seen a cucumber beetle, but making a puree out of peels with some flesh and adding sevin does sound like a plan. Will do if the problem presents itself, no hurt in trying. It would be interesting to hear results this season from people that try it. Maybe start a thread in the pest and disease forum and track results.

"Diva" has been a winner for me for years -
Great taste, great production ... can't complain ~

I grew DIva last year and it was great. I am growing it again this year as well as bushy cucumber from sse public catalog. Here is what SSE says:

"Introduced to American gardeners by SSE in 1992. Well-known older variety that originated in southern Russia. Recommended for dacha gardens that surround Moscow because of its compact "bush" plants with 3-5' vines. Good production, for fresh eating or pickling. 46-49 days"

Have never grown it (bushy cucumber) will see how it does.
