Fall dwarf grow-out in the greenhouse

I am participating in the dwarf grow-out as well as growing a bunch of Andrey's dwarves. I am limiting myself to 20 varieties-any more and its really pushing it in my hobby greenhouse.

I am just starting seed today. All varieties will go in 5 gallon growbags with a cage or stick to support them.

Here are my varieties:

From the Grow-out:

Summertime Gold 3 (pl2) Sweet Sue
Summertime Gold 2 (pl1)
Barossa Fest 2 (pl1) Dwarf Beryl Beauty
Summertime Green (rl2)
Barossa Fest 2 (rl 2) Dwarf Kelly Green

From Andrey:

Severnaya Malyutka
Nevskiy
Balkonzauber
Amurskiy Shtamb
Taimyr
Rosalinda
Zimnyaya Vishnya
Rozovyi Leader
Otradnyi
Alpha

Oldies but Goodies:

Adam 1
Mini Red Cherry
Mano (rugose)

Two new ones for me:

Besser Dwarf (from Fusion)
Lazy Man (from Jeanne)

D-Dwarf tomatoes are my favorites-I dont grow anything but dwarves in the greenhouse-in the fall and in January.. I have about 75 different dwarves, maybe 100-its my passion.

akgardengirl September 2, 2007 11:58 PM

dwarves

Andrey's "Balkonzauber" did very good here, 1/2 the season outside and the last 1/2 in a greenhouse. Ping pong sized fruit and lots of it. I also had "Pinnochio" and "Arkticheskaya Vishnya" (quite the tomato name...I am glad I never had to speak the name to someone!). I virtually could not tell the Pinnochio and the AV apart as they had the same growing habit and height, the fruits looked identical and DTM was the same. I will be waiting to hear about the other dwarves from Andrey. Although we have totally different growing seasons, maybe your winter season will sorta be like a really good summer here!
Sue

Andrey_BY September 3, 2007 03:40 AM

Yes, Sue, Balkonzauber and Pinnochio look very identical
How about Arkticheskaya Vishnya (Arctic Cherry) for you? Mine bears red cherry fruits instead of pink cherries as original description is telling...

mdvpc September 3, 2007 09:55 AM

What I am really proud of is that I typed the names of Andrey's varieties without mis-spelling. :D

Sue, I think you are right. My greenhouse fall growing season may be like your summer. Stay tuned to this thread for info on how the season goes.

akgardengirl September 3, 2007 10:44 AM

Andrey,
The Pinnochio and the AV (my abbreviation for that dwarf!) are the 2 that look identical, not the Balkonzauber. The Balkonzauber has orange/red fruits, saladette size, maybe a little bigger than the ping pong like I said earlier and the other two are small cherry sized and lighter orange in color. The Balkonzauber produced early and the other two plugged along with only a few ripe ones here and there. I just yesterday pulled all the tomato plants and have them all ripening in cardboard boxes scattered around the house. Our weather could not produce anymore ripe ones for me.

Andrey_BY September 3, 2007 11:46 AM

Yes, I meant AV and P :)

Michael, I'm very glad you are the one like that :D A good cause to learn Russian for you  Let's start with the pronunciation of the word "Dostoprimechatelnost" (Sightseeing)

mdvpc September 3, 2007 02:21 PM

Andrey- Ok, I just pronounced it perfectly.

Whats next?

Andrey_BY September 4, 2007 05:31 AM

I should better safe your voice and tongue :D

How about Utyonok? Don't you want to try it this fall as you already got seeds from me?! ;) I belive you won't be dissapointed...

mdvpc September 4, 2007 08:34 AM

Andrey-I didnt put Utyonok on the grow list for 2 reasons-The first is that I knew you didnt need seed back for it, and the second is that I am growing several non-red, non-pink varieties already in the fall greenhouse.

Not that I didnt want to try it, and I thank you for the seed. I plan on growing it in the greenhouse in January (my second greenhouse season).

Andrey_BY September 4, 2007 08:43 AM

No problem - you are the Boss in your garden :D

mdvpc September 4, 2007 12:21 PM

Andrey-I am not the boss in my garden-my wife is-I do what she tells me to do with regard to everything-After 30 years of marriage, I found out that is the best way!

Michael,
Have you tried "Resista" dwarf? I will have fresh seeds for that one soon. I have grown it two seasons now and like the taste. It is approx. 18" tall and has round, red fruits. Maybe something new for your greenhouse in Jan.?
Sue

mdvpc September 4, 2007 08:05 PM

Sue-Never heard of that variety-I would like seed. I will pm you.

Andrey_BY September 5, 2007 02:45 AM

Michael - it's really good to have your own angel and guide for the whole life and I have the one like you have, but always think to have at least a bit of the private life for hobbies. You are lucky your wife are always with you in the garden, but mine is not (especially when I'm doing my seedsaving things) and our balcony is full of bad smells :D

mdvpc September 5, 2007 08:53 AM

Andrey-I didnt say she was out in the garden-she isnt-I just said she was the boss there. In other words, "why dont you clean up those dirty pots?" or "that smells." Things like that. My response always is that she likes eating the tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, kale, chard, cutting lettuces, rucola, cicoria, etc.

She is a wonderful woman and my life is complete with her. But gardener, no.

Andrey_BY September 6, 2007 03:16 AM

Then try to develope a new variety with an excellent flavor and do name it after her! Possibly you will have some positive changes about "smell & dirt" in the future ;)

mdvpc September 6, 2007 08:49 AM

Andrey-You already sent me a variety that I am growing this fall that is close enough to her name-Rozalinda-her name is Rosalina.

Andrey_BY September 7, 2007 08:05 AM

Then good luck and a lovely peace to your family in the garden :D

mdvpc September 7, 2007 09:00 AM

Andrey-And the same to you and your family. I will keep you posted on the germination/growout.

Andrey_BY September 15, 2007 02:55 AM

Here are some fresh Rozalinda fruits along with Izumrudnoe Yabloko (Emerald Apple), De Barao Oranzhevyi (Orange De Barao) and 2 fruits of Zolotaya Rybka (Gold Fish).
The flavour of Rozalinda is much as I like with both sweets and acids on a high note :) . You and your wife gonna like it ;)

mdvpc September 24, 2007 11:34 PM

Andrey-I just saw your post. I am definitely looking forward to this fall and the grow-out. I will post a photo of the plants I have soon. Didnt get germination on 2 of them, so I sowed my last seed of each of them.

Andrey_BY September 25, 2007 12:57 PM

Michael, that sounds strange because I had have 100% with Rozalinda seeds so far. If you won't be able to let them sproute I'll send you more fresh seeds from what I've just proceeded ;)

mdvpc September 25, 2007 01:10 PM

Andrey-my posting was unclear-sorry. Rozalinda did germinate. There are 2 varieties that didnt, and I am at work so I cant tell you which ones. They were from the spring mailing you sent me-and you were able to only send 3 seed of each. I will post this evening which 2 they are-hopefully I will get germination of the last seed I have. I have them in intensive care and am watching them closely.

mdvpc September 25, 2007 07:21 PM

Andrey-the dwarves that are in the icu are Balkonzauber and Amurskiy Shtamb. All the rest are doing well and will probably be put in 5 gallon grow bags this weekend.

Andrey_BY September 26, 2007 03:22 AM

OK, you can substitute these two varieties with any from what I've sent you besides them or anything you think would be good to grow right now, of course :D And I'll you more seeds of these 2 varieties a bit later...

Andrey-I am hoping that I get germination on the last seed I had for each of these 2. We will see. Here is a photo taken just now of the your varieties that are getting ready to go into the grow bags.

Andrey_BY September 27, 2007 02:29 AM

OK, Michael.
a Very nice bouquet indeed :-)

I got germination on my last seed for Amurskiy Shtamb. :D So I am only waiting for germination on Balkonzauber and Lazy Man.

Here is the photo of one side of the greenhouse set up. I have Barossa Fest 2 (rl 2) Dwarf Kelly Green and Summertime Green RL 2 the big rectangular containers-5 plants each. Most everything else is one plant, except for Sweet Sue and Barossa Fest 2 (pl1) Dwarf Beryl Beauty-2 plants each.

Cant figure out how to attach multiple photos in a post.
