What melon is this?
I need help figuring out a melon I grew years ago. This melon was bought from Park seed I think and I think I remember it being called Crenshaw but looking at pics of Crenshaw melons they don't look anything like it.
It was the size of a cantaloupe. The rind started out almost black and was covered with what I could only describe as hair. After the hair fell off it changed to a lighter green and was ripe shortly after. It was green fleshed and grew well with no care given. The taste was incredible. I am still chasing that flavor and have yet to find as good in any other melon. Any idea what this could have been? |

The one I thought of is called Sugar Baby https://bonnieplants.com/product/sugar-baby-watermelon/

Thanks Salt but it was green fleshed and in the 2 or 3lb range. The internal seed cavity was just like that of a cantaloupe. Oh and I have grown Sugar Baby, their flavor is nowhere near the intensity of what I had grown.

I'd like some.:lol::lol: |
Me too, maybe it was just beginners luck. That was the first year I grew a garden and I just threw stuff all over and picked whatever I could. After looking at Baker Creek it could be this one http://www.rareseeds.com/crenshaw-melon/?F_Sort=10 mine were smaller but that could be because of neglect.

Looks tasty with great reviews .gonna get some and midget okra too! |
I still have seeds for the ones I grew. But they are around 10 years old now. I may try the Miracle grow soak and see if I can get any germination. He11 worth a shot right?

hmmm, I really searched hard for this one. It obviously is a sort of honeydew like melon, personal size. However the black when first forming is not common. Is it netted at all?
|
Oh, sorry I thought you said it was green fleshed. Yeah then that crenshaw melon is probably what you were thinking! haha.
|
I remember it as green, but its been a decade and the description says its kinda multicolored flesh so that could certainly be it. I am gonna try to germinate my seeds. Fingers crossed.

Heck yeah

Could be  I just remember reading it somewhere on here. I put 10 seeds in to soak. They are all floating but I think that is expected with 10 year old seed. Not sure, I dont know much about melon seed viability. |

To update: I soaked 10 seeds in miracle grow for 48 hours (was waiting for all of them to sink)then planted in 3' pots with sterile mix on 11/20/16. As of now I have one sprouted! I can't wait to eat these melons again. :D

Could it be Jenny Lind cantaloupe ? A green flesh cantaloupe.
|
I think it is the old Cresnhaw variety, but I wont know until I see the melons again. It is anybodies guess right now. I'm just glad my 10 year old seed germinated so I can be sure I have the same thing.

Don't forget to save seeds. :) I'm sure you'll have lots of people interested.
I'm growing Crenshaw this year. This melon came to mind, but it's orange inside. |
This is another. It has green flesh, it says. I'm growing it, this year.
Possibly could be the Crane melon. |
I will find out soon. I've got some planted now.
