Very nice. Attractive peppers, aren't they...and productive as well.

Plant 5's fruit is 2.5" long, Plant 6's is 2.75". All seven of the sweet pepper plants have 3 - 4 peppers in the first flush.

Here are my seven sweets and a hot all lined up for a group photo (Plant 1 is at far right.). The plants behind the peppers are what remains of my growout of Chocolate Champion F4 tomatoes. By the way, the (formerly) red trays at upper left (and upper right) are supposed to prevent weeds - [COLOR=red]not true![/COLOR] The weeds get plenty of light through the thin plastic and simply curl around under the raised collar. The weeds are hidden, not prevented. The trays almost last one season.

The plants have very sparse leaf cover which makes the fruit on the Sweets highly succeptible to sun scald.

I think the jury is in. All seven sweets grown from seed from this vial go to brick-red/red as they ripen. Because I'm growing these plants in a large community garden which is often open to the public, I decided to pick the most ripe of each plant with ripe fruit (plant 4 is in its second flush of fruit) before they start to walk off. Here is what they look like: [COLOR=magenta]NOTE:[/COLOR] The peppers id'ed in the photo as being from Plant 1 and Plant 2 are actually from Plant 2 and Plant 1 respectively. Sorry for the confusion.

The pepper from Plant 3 has two spots of sun scald (one is visible at lower right) eventhough the plants have been protected from the direct sun from about the time these fruits were formed. The pepper from Plant 5 was picked a bit early because some pest was gnawing on the side you can't see.

With Craig's concurrence and blessing, I'm offering to anyone who would like them, samples of seeds from my grow-out of his sweet Islander 2.2 as shown in my posts 78 through 80 and 82 on this thread. PM me for details.

Plants 2, 3, 5 and 8 have set no new fruit so they have no chance of producing peppers of any size prior to the first frost. Therefore, they were 'retired' to the compost heap today. Plants 1, 4 and 6 are still growing, so they're still going. Plant 7, the hot cross, is producing a new crop of red peppers.

November 14, 2009

All remaining plants pulled today. Plant 4 had a couple of new peppers, which were a very small garden snack.

Somehow, we've avoided a killing frost in Raleigh - my entire set of peppers (after feeding well) rebloomed and are loaded with fruit! They won't make it to ripe color, I think - but will be appreciated this winter once they are cubed and stocked into freezer bags.

Now I need to ponder which selections to take forward next year - would like to focus on one line of each color....white to golden yellow, white to orange red, white to lavender to red, white to lavender to gold, and green to black purple to red. All of them are really productive, thankfully!

Craig, would you want some seeds returned to you from my growout of Tawny Port F3 seed, vial 08-11? The Islander plant 7.2, F4 seed, vial 08-29 was a bust for me. I got 0 germ on the first round, 1 germ on the second round, but the plant died b4 I could get it into the garden.

Sure - what did you end up with for the Tawny Port growouts?

Post 41 shows what they looked like. They were tasty for me and did well (until the [EMAIL="d@^%"]d@^%[/EMAIL] hornworms found them in October!) I was hoping for some more, but that was too late for them to recover and produce!
