My biggest deception this year had to be Cherokee Green. The first one I tried felt and looked ripe but the tomato was really tart. So with about 50 tomatoes on this monster I was thinking lots for the freezer.

I really wasn't expecting much from a green tomato anyway. I decided to let them stay on the vine for about a week after they felt and looked ripe . So when I tried the next one I found out what all the fuss was about. This is a wonderful tomato. Wonderful enough to challenge Earl's Faux for the number 1 spot. I ate one yesterday and it still tastes as good as it did in August but it hasn't really been cold here yet so all the tomatoes still taste good.

Way more productive than Cherokee Purple and right up there with Earl's Faux in production. The taste is something like you would pay a lot of money for in tropical fruit section of the grocery store.

No cracking at all. No diseases, all good.

A must grow every year. The only negative is the plant gets really tall and requires a ladder to tie the plant to the stake.I am guessing this plant is well over 10 feet and maybe over 11. Hard to tell since it has slipped down the pole. I will measure it when I pull it up:D
You might try experimenting with Dwarfs and micros. Not
recommending you scrap your entire usual growing system as is.
(next year just may have better weather and a bit longer season).
I'll keep an eye out for January's seed list then, thanks.
I'll put in a plug for Hardin's Miniature. The taste is strong, old-fashioned, tangy goodness and it continues to produce forever.

Those look interesting. Where would I be able to get them from?

I can't really call it the biggest deception, but I sure don't know what is going on. This is a picture of my fruit on Coorong Pink. This plant was grown from purchased seed and gave off pink fruit all season. Now I have blue/purple shoulders on the green fruit. This has been an unseasonably warm fall and no temperatures below 50 degrees.
Fathers Daughter,

I wouldn't give up just yet. I'm on the MA/RI border. This particular season all of my tomatoes ripened exactly as you described. I know that several local farms and gardeners had the same problem with ripening. I've grown GA for a few seasons now and they really have been great in the past.
A couple of weekends ago we visited a farm/apple orchard in southern NH that grows dozens of Heirloom/OP tomatoes every year. They still had some left and I picked up a couple I had seeds for, but have never grown, and I also bought one of their Gregori Altai to try.

It looked nothing like the ones I had on my plant...

Even my later season fruit had the funky, sour taste of the earlier ones, but the purchased one was all tomato and very good.

I just looked up GA on the tomatobase and the entry looks more like the farm fruit than what I got. I saved seeds from it and am going to try again. The seeds I had were from the swap, so no way of knowing if they were the correct seed, if they were crossed...???

Was excited about Blush, but it was bland. Reminded me of Green Grape - heard good things, but was dissapointed in the flavor.

Comstock slice and sauce..... I am cleaning up the garden and this is what is waste. The plants kept churning out the tomatoes.

you need hogs

Yeah, I thought the exact same thing.

Wow, look at all those greenies! I still have a couple colanders on my counter but ... Wow.

and that was only 6 plants. I was totally shocked by what producers they were. everything in the garden was hit with bacterial speck but these kept pluggin away. and I just checked .... this is an OP variety. what a winner.

MdTNGrdner November 8, 2017 03:51 PM

Yes, certainly sounds good

I've heard of it but that's all - you're growing it again next year?

clkeiper November 8, 2017 04:51 PM

I think it is a keeper.
