I started my seed today. About a week or so late.

Here in Houston we're supposed to have high temperatures around 70 for the next two days. If the wind behaves I'm going to take the babies outside to get a little sun.

I started my seeds on Tuesday 1/19

Kat, sorry I'm just replying to your post. The tomatoes in my pic are Brandywine Sudduth's. They look pretty red in the picture but they are the big beautiful pinks. Most people seem to have trouble with numbers from the Sudduth's but I have always had good numbers and great looking ones.
|
I grew Cowlicks that where nice and big like that last year. I will get a chance to try out the Sudduth strain this year and compare the two. I was really happy to have such huge tomatoes from the Cowlicks. And the taste was great.

I plan on starting my seed on February 13th. Looking forward to growing some new maters.
Happy Matering, Paul |
I WANTED to start my seed in February but it ain't gonna happen. Looks like 3/2/10 is going to be the best I can muster (still it is sooner than last year 3/10 - 3/18 starts & they did fine here).

I have started peppers second week of January and some of the tomatoes week ago. Hundres and thousands was the first tomato to pop up. There will still be about four months, before I can put them outdoors, but the season here is so short that the plants must be ready to bloom when moved outside.

Peppers March first, Tomatoes, Eggplant, Gourds, Other Melons April first, Watermelon, Tomatillos May 1st. Our average last day of frost here is June 1st... On a GREAT year, last frost middle of May and first frost middle of September...the years that keep hope eternal...:) I am amusing myself today filling out plant tags...

I started my tomatoes 2 days ago. I'm hoping to get the peppers started this week.

I started sowing some tomato and chillies in mid January, they will be grown on indoors, first in the house on windowsills then a green house which has a little heat. Hopefully they are well grown when it is time to plant them out after the last frost, into either a greenhouse or polytunnel .
Similar to Svalli, summers can be short and it rains alot! So I try and start early as it is a bit of a juggle raising enough plants on the windowsill. |

I'm guessing you must use a greenhouse? If not, how do you manage that? |
I start my peppers at varied times. Some right now, some in early March. Tomatoes are started 3/15 or 4/1. I plant out 6/1 usually. I grow tons of other veggies and sowing times obviously vary.

I do have a 10'x12' greenhouse , but it is still in it's packing box... I keep my plants indoors by windows with additional fluorescent lights. When weather permits I will move the plants outside into a 3'x6' plastic tent greenhouse, where I have a small electric heater for really cold nights. Moving outdoors may happen earliest in mid May, so our spare bedroom will have quite a jungle growing by then. My in-laws have an extra GH, but this year I am not planning to grow any tomatoes there due to the long distance and feeling of guilt when they have to water my plants. This means that I should not grow a lot of seedlings, since I have to grow them in containers in the city. It is so hard to select the varieties and not to sow too much... |
i will start my seeds in mid or early march. my date to plant outside is mid may.

Here in Chicago I've found that setting my tomato plants out from Memorial day into the first week of June gives best results. Less chance of early blight.
So that means I'll start my seeds in mid April. Every year my seedlings are big and strong after just 5 weeks under lights indoors. Then one week of hardening off and I'm good to go. |
I started my first peppers 1/9/ 2010, my first tomatoes 1/15 and my second batch of tomatoes 1/28. I had 16 varieties that didn't germinate at all and another 20 or so that only got one or two seedlings. This was a really cold year and my greenhouse stayed too cold even though I used a gas heater for several nights but cost is very high and still had poor germination. Now that it is warming up I'll replant about 35 varieties and some others that I haven't tried to start yet in the next week or so.

I'm starting my tomato seeds the weekend of March 13. Since peppers take a bit longer to germinate, I'm going to start the seeds this weekend. With the crazy weather here in south central KS, not sure if the frost free date will hold this year but I'm sure the seedlings will be fine under the light in my basement for a couple of weeks past the date. :)
When is you 2010 season seed starting date ?
Mine is feb 15.
I live in southeastern Michigan, zone 5, and the first safe frost free date here is usually considered to be May 15th, so many or most people here start seed 6 weeks earlier or about April 5th. |
On 1-8-10 I was going to start anyday - well mid of last week started 250 outside on seed starting mats - temps were rainy and cold for last 2 weeks - oh well - at about 60% germination overall because seeds from Heirloom acres have only germinated 27% and Heirloom seeds 50% - TF has done the best so far at 74% but more coming up daily
plan to start my next tray tomorrow and more as the weather warms Dennis |
