I see posts from Vermont to Oregon. How in the world to you get tomatoes on the many heirlooms you are growing? I can't even grow them here in PA.
I once grew a Brandywine and got 0. I grew Omar's Lebanese and got 1 per plant. I grew Silvery Fir Tree , got thousands of blossoms and only 2 tomatoes. So many failures here. Are you using radioactive fertilizer? CECIL |

I have sandy soil, amended with nothing but compost. I start them indoors in April, and plant out late May, early June. I prune to one or two stems, and I believe that helps. I stake with what I think is called Florida weave, though I also stake individually, and have another tying up system I use as well, But mostly it's the Florida Weave.

CECIL
Hey, Cecil- some years are better than others and varieties can be more or less productive, but I think we're in a pretty prime growing area for tomatoes- very similar to south Jersey. I don't think fertilizer is the key but rather good soil and a bit of an appropriate fertilizer. In fact, too much fertilizer will give you too many leaves and few fruits. A long time ago when I tried a generic "Brandywine" from a store I got only 2 or 3 tomatoes but a couple years ago I got dozens off pruned plants of the Sudduth's and Cowlick's varieties. Never tried the other two you mentioned. I'm not sure how many tomatoes you've tried to grow but you'll find all sorts of helpful information here about tomato culture, productive varieties to try, etc. so I hope you're going to keep on trying! kath |
You all are making me feel so much better about the length of my list.

My seedlings have all sprouted, this promises to be a very good year! |

kath
Thanks, Kath! It's good to know I'm not alone. My friends think I'm nuts. (that is until harvest season arrives) My local hydroponic store is my new best friend. This year I invested $20 in a heat mat, I'm sure that made a big difference this year. 5 day germination as opposed to 10. |
Wow, these are some lists! Mine is pretty simple.
Bought plants from local nursery: Sweet 100 cherry Patio tomato Bettter Boy Then bought some seeds: Mexico Midget cherry Red Currant Chocolate Cherry Wins All (PL, thus Carolyn says not true to name), a large pink slicer Rainbow Beefsteak seed mix from Totally Tomatoes Then bought some more seeds: Jaune Flamme Lollipop (cherry) Super Italian Paste Egyptian (paste) Big Ray's Argentina Paste If I had room and time to deal with more this first season, I am intrigued by: Cherokee Purple Paul Robeson some of the Brandywines I have heard praised here ... Just ate the first of the ruby ripe Better Boys, with 2 more imminent and several to follow. Pretty but kind of mild. |
So far the list is:
German Johnson Nyagous Cherokee Purple Black Krim Indigo Rose Ananas Noire Kellogg's Breakfast Orange Minsk Porkchop-- bonus pack I got from remy, excited for it |

So far I only planted 3 varieties of tomatoes and 2 of them sprouted in 5 days but none of the third type are up yet on day 10 so I'll probably plant some more seed for that one soon. Let me know if you find the perfect one this year.;) kath |

Maybe Cherokee Purple would be quick enough for a late-season planting. I'd love to know what you think about Wins All when you get a ripe one. It's intrigued me several times but I've never grown it. kath |
Cecil, you have been saying what you said for years ... anyone as good as you could grow good tomatoes if you really wanted to. Give it another try.
