.....so in order to overcome the barrier of soil depth, it's going to be necessary to treat the soil in a different way. What I will be describing will not only work with the heat gun, but will also make the typical soil solarization method be as effective as it really needs to be.
Below is a photo of the project area. Jay |

The next step will be to lay down a layer of cardboard next to the row to be treated. All grass, weeds and roots should be removed from the row. As mentioned earlier, you want to use large sections of carboard so that you do not have numerous seams.

The photo below shows the beginning of the next step. Yes, most of the soil from the row will have to be dug up....this is essential. My rows are 3' wide by 24' long.

I forgot to add that the short term documentation of the results of this technique will be done by microscope both before and after. I decided not to grow plants this fall in those rows but will grow in them next spring.
I happen to have a microscope at home and will use it to verify the results through the use of an aggregate sample collected from numerous locations within each row and from various depths. Jay |
Sorry for dropping the ball on this.....I got so engrossed in my database that I let this slide. This project is completed...I just need to post the details and some updated photos. I'll have the method posted on my website.
Coming soon.... Jay |
