Galina's
Black Cherry
Matina
Old Brooks
Pruden's Purple
Persimmon
Aunt Gertie's Gold
Yellow Brandywine Platfoot Strain

I provide my plants to friends and family which works out nicely for me, seeing as I am an apartment dweller with no available ground.

I start 'em from seed, they plant 'em, care for 'em, and I stop by once a week during the season for all the fresh tomatoes I could ever want.:D

stonysoilseeds April 11, 2012 09:47 PM

thats a great arrangement sliphorn , have you considered growing some at a communiyu garden in your area as well?

sliphorn April 11, 2012 09:59 PM

Hi, Stony. There are some community garden plots all around Chicago but I've yet to look into doing that. Maybe next year. Thanks for the idea.

All the tomatos are being grown in high density community pots and ready for repotting. I have an almost 100% gremination rate on all varieties except for indigo rose. I planted the entire seed packet and only 2 seeds sprouted. Bummer.
This year I am using promix to start my seeds, Perfect mix. Last year I used a different potting mix and it was a disaster. Almost 50 varieties never sprouted, rotted out. I hate funerals. This year its a beautiful sight.

OK, I'll bite!
Here's what I'm working on.

italic means I haven't sown it yet---just got my seeds from Remy the other day (FYI she wasn't slow---I was late ordering!), so if I don't get them sown tonight (I might) they may have to wait till next year

Here's what I've got growing in cups:

Brandywine From Croatia
Cherokee Purple
Chocolate Cherry
Earl's Faux
Fish Lake Oxheart
Fox Cherry
Gary'O Sena
Goose Creek
Indian Stripe
Isis Candy
KBX
Kosovo
Little Lucky
Ludmilla's Pink Heart
Moravsky Div
Moskvich
Mr. Stripey beefsteak
Rumi Banjan
Siberian Pink Honey
Sungold

And an Uncle Joe's from the local Master Gardeners -- they said one of them got the seeds from an uncle in Italy. Supposed to be a great-tasting large Roma-shaped tomato they like to use as a slicer.

Wanted to grow Orange Minsk but couldn't find the seed packet. Probably just as well.

zabby17 April 16, 2012 10:07 PM

sliphorn,

In your short list, you have four of my most favourites!

Galina's I LOVE, it's my all-time fave cherry and maybe my fave tomato (and I'm not growing it this year---ran out of seed, didn't order more in time, sniff!).

Matina is often my fave of the earlies I've tried. (Not growing that either, as I ran out and my new seed came toward the end of my planting window and I already had Stupice and New Yorker started, which will give me a decent fix.)

I love Yellow Brandywine, maybe my fave big yellow.

And Black Cherry---maybe my second fave cherry! (Or maybe Snow White. I love both, and they look so amazing in a salad together....)

Good luck with your garden year!

Z

Casino, there is no variety White Zebra, I thought you'd appreciate knowing that.;)

The variety is Blonde Boar as bred by Brad Gates but was renamed, wrongly, which led to calling it White Zebra. There's a thread here about it if you want to do a bit of searching.:)

Carolyn, Thanks for the white zebra update, I did not know the history, received the seeds from a T.V. exchange. I will update my grow tags.

Fusion_power April 21, 2012 08:53 PM

This is my list of varieties planted so far with 8 rows across the garden. It does not include about 20 cherry/grape varieties that I will set out sometime in the next 3 days. There are also about 20 more large fruited varieties that I haven't gotten to yet. I also have 3 - Pienolo that will be put somewhere special so I can keep them pure. Then I have a tray with about 30 varieties for breeding work including some wild species, some dwarf project varieties, and other unusual stuff. I'll have to fix a row just for the specials.
